So dominant has Man City’s start to the season been, that Paddy Power are already paying out on Manuel Pellegrini’s side winning the title.
The Irish bookmakers said that City were “worthy champions” of the 2015/16 Premier League title and that “the wins over Chelsea and West Brom were key to City regaining their crown.”
The controversial bookies say the title race is over, following Man City’s win over Chelsea. “We feel that over the course of the season, City have been the dominant force,” said Mr. Power. “They have a 100% record home and away and have yet to concede a single goal.”
Many feel PP are taking a huge gamble by paying out so early in the season. “We are not gambling,” said Power.
“Man City are the champions. We didn’t get to where we are by gambling. We’re not idiots. We don’t foresee this backfiring in any way whatsoever.”
Others in the media argued that this is the latest in a long line of outrageous publicity stunts. Again, Power responded, saying: “Publicity stunt? I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with the phrase… We simply believe that there are 3 ways of doing something: the right way, the wrong way and the Paddy Power way, which is essentially the wrong way but with added Irishness.”
Mourinho said the announcement was “bittersweet”. “Clearly I’m disappointed the title is over but also happy. I had £100 on City at 3/1,” he said.
Van Gaal seemed dismissive of Paddy Power calling the title after just two days: “This announcement confirms what I already knew, the Irish are a strange people.”
Paddy Power also confirmed they are paying out on Sunderland getting relegated, and Liverpool finishing 7th. Finally they have opened betting for the 2016/17 season, but “betting is suspended on City retaining their title”.
