Former Ireland captain, Roy Keane has announced that he is to vote yes in the upcoming Irish marriage equality referendum on May 22nd.
The Rep. of Ireland assistant also said that he has questioned his sexuality at various times in his Manchester United and Ireland career.
In a frank and surprisingly open interview with Eamon Dunphy (to be broadcasted on RTE in May), Keane revealed that he had been unsure of his sexuality and often had certain “urges” while playing for Manchester United and Ireland. “Well, playing and showering with guys like Ronaldo, Beckham, Sharpe, and Irwin week in, week out, is bound to arouse certain feelings, like” the Man Utd legend said. “Nicky Butt had a great arse too!” he announced, leaving Dunphy looking stunned.
Dunphy attempted to redirect questioning towards the Rep. of Ireland’s crucial Euro 2016 qualifying games in June but Keane continued. “I’ve always admired men in drag too. I’ve always wished I had Brendan O’Carroll’s career.” Next Dunphy asked Keane how he felt the Republic of Ireland squad would react to the news. The Republic of Ireland assistant was coy with his response: “Oh trust me Eamonn, they know…”
Denis Irwin was unavailable for comment.
